Measures 0-10,000 footcandles (fc)/0 to 100,000 lux The quality of light in the workplace, schools, and public buildings affects the quantity and quality of performance in workers and students. Luminous intensity must fulfill specific minimum guidelines in order to be considered good quality light. Approximately 80% of sensations are experienced through the eye. For this, the human eye requires light. According to an American study, 25% of human energy is needed for the process of sight. Humans are accustomed to the light intensity available during the day (approximately 500 fc on a dreary day and up to 10,000 fc on a sunny day). Compare this to the light intensity of artificial light (between 1 and 10 fc) and you can see where the problem lies. Fatigue caused by too little light is generally experienced as systemic tiredness rather than just eye fatigue alone. After spending eight hours a day, five days a week in the typical work setting, the fatigue of too little light can cause degradation of performance.
