STEAMup: Inspiring Interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Math

On Sunday November 6th, 98 children from Blacksburg and the surrounding communities attended "STEAMup". STEAMup was organized by the Leadership in Architecture, Engineering, and Construction class. At the event children ages kindergarten through eighth grade were shown fun ways to explore the STEAM fields (STEM + Art). The Theme Park Engineering and Design Group at Virginia Tech, Virginia Tech's chapter of Building Women in Construction and Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers were among 15 booths groups that provided hands-on learning opportunities for the attendees.

In addition to the 98 children there over 50 parents who gave positive reviews to the event. One of the parents commented that her son is "very hands on, and the experience was great for him." Also, she found that the event was "the perfect place to come and make a mess and not worry about breaking anything." STEAMup was the culmination of months of planning by over 30 graduate studentsĀ and the result of Dr. Iorio's Leadership Class Project.
