Biography
Michael J. Garvin, Ph.D., P.E. is an Assistant Professor in the Myers-Lawson School of Construction. His research and education pursuits are geared toward fundamentally changing how institutional owners, such as Departments of Transportation, Universities, and Federal Agencies, make constructed (or real) asset investment and financing decisions. His current research projects, which are all funded by the National Science Foundation, are developing decision support systems for portfolio-level facilities investment decisions and identifying best practices for Public-Private Partnership (P3) arrangements through case-based research. Dr. Garvin is a 2004 recipient of the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists & Engineers (PECASE), which is intended to recognize the finest national scientists and engineers who, while early in their research careers, show exceptional potential for leadership at the frontiers of scientific knowledge during the twenty-first century. It is the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. government on outstanding scientists and engineers beginning their independent careers. He also recently completed service on the National Research Council’s Committee for Core Competencies for Federal Facilities Asset Management, is a member of ASCE’s Construction Research Council and Infrastructure Systems Committee, is on the editorial board for the journal Public Works Management & Policy, and is a specialty editor for the case studies division of the ASCE Journal of Construction Engineering & Management.
